A good market research section starts with asking the right questions. For some plans it’s simple; there’s often only one market from which to choose. Other times, it takes extensive research to determine what market you actually need to explore.

Start with a plan:

  • Begin with a broad-based search
  • See what you find and narrow from there
  • Ask, “Who is my audience?”
  • Determine what you are trying to communicate
  • Determine what is the end-goal of the market research
  • Write a rough outline and add or delete as necessary
  • Set it aside and come back later with fresh eyes

Now, there’s the issue of quality over quantity. How do you distinguish what’s relevant for your specific business? A quick internet search results in thousands of pages of information that probably will give you a couple actual good answers. It’s important to discern between actual market reports and third-party report marketers, which often have more fluff than substance.

AI is also making it more difficult to distinguish between good or bad sources. All market research in your plan should be cited. Much of what the now-ubiquitous AI assist features churn out is a mixture of what it finds on various websites of often-dubious quality.

AI will list several bullet points, sometimes listing its sources though many times not.  This just further muddies the water when it comes to finding good sources and providing your plan with thoroughly researched, reliable data.

Instead, you should look for multiple sources, not relying on an easy “summary” from AI or a random website, though you don’t always need to present all those sources in a plan. It just depends on the specific market, target segments, customers and industry in which you’re operating. Sometimes, there’s really just one source that matters – just do your due diligence and make sure what’s being presented is as accurate and trustworthy as possible.
